Kerry Castell- Spence

Kerry Castell-Spence
Dip Acupuncture, Dip Qigong, Dip Tuina, Member NZRA, ACC Treatment Provider.
Kerry first became interested in healthcare from having a mother who was a Registered Nurse. The first real intention to become involved in the practice of manual therapies came with a visit to Ivan Parr, an Osteopath in Palmerston North. With the treatment that he received for a lower back pain he became interested in manipulative Osteopathy. Then while training in Thai Boxing at VUW Kickboxing at Victoria University studying for a BA in History and Philosophy at Victoria he was introduced to Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture and Qigong by Richard Henderson, a student at the New Zealand School of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (NZSATCM). The treatment that he received for muscle sprains and training injuries piqued his interest in Acupuncture and he knew he had found his calling.
Several years later Kerry moved to Auckland, after a detour to Rotorua for a couple of years where he began training in Aikido and ran a family café, and found another school of the NZSATCM. There he was introduced to Acupuncture, Tuina (a form of Chinese manual therapy similar to Osteopathy) and Qigong (energetic exercises and cultivation). During his training at the NZSATCM he met Peter Caughey from Forest Rock who introduced him to Qigong and Yang Style Taiji. In 2005 Kerry began training in Tian Chuan Gong Chi Gong and graduated from the Diplomas of Tuina and Qigong in 2005. In 2006 as Kerry continued his study of Acupuncture he began a teaching role at a pilot school of NZSATCM in Pukekohe teaching the diploma of Qigong and Taiji. During this time Kerry also began learning other forms of manual techniques including Positional Release (strain counterstrain and Muscle Energy Technique from Marshal Gabin) muscle release techniques and work with ligaments, joints and other connective tissue systems (balanced ligamentous tension from Paul Hume ND DO) through friendships with Osteopathic students and practitioners and began training in Chen Style Taiji with Dr Pengde Cui who he also learned Tuina from at the NZSATCM. During Kerry’s final year at NZSATCM (2007) he started practicing Tuina at Forest Rock Clinic and did external Acupuncture clinics at Forest Rock.
Now as a member of the New Zealand Register of Acupuncturists and as an ACC treatment Provider, Kerry continues to work at Forest Rock Clinic and integrates Acupuncture, Tuina and Qigong with gentle manual therapeutic techniques. Kerry also trains in Aikido and teaches a children’s class within the Aikido Shinryukan organization under Nobuo Takase Shihan (the New Zealand representative of Aikikai World Headquarters). Kerry also continues to train in Tian Quan Chi Gong with Dr Sunny Lu for personal cultivation and to deliver Qigong treatment as part of his practice.
